Promoting the Importance of Human Relationships

Every year there is a special theme to the World Social Work Day and this year aim is to promote the importance of human relationships. This theme was established to build international focus on the interdependence of people and the need for change in policies and social service delivery. Valuing every human being, promoting equality and believing that all lives matter in the hopes endorsing world peace and giving importance to all human relationships. Social work is about doing something for others, to make a difference in this world because unlike animals, we are gifted with love, compassion and intelligence. It has been our constant endeavour to encourage more and more people to volunteer for various social activities which are carried out in our country. With a large population such as India, if each one of us donates just a few hours every week, we could make this country a much better place.

5 Activities for World Social Work Day

Let us all take this opportunity to make this change in our lives and donate our sweat and time for a good cause we believe in this World Social Work Day. Social work boosts our mental and physical attributes and we also learn some invaluable skills by participating or organising these activities. Participate and be part of something bigger than yourself, be part of a change.

  • Initiate a Cleaning Drive-
We have all been a part of the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” for the past few years. Let us take it one step forward and start from our community. You can take this opportunity to initiate a clean drive in your area, encourage children as well as others to participate and educate the underprivileged as well about the importance of cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Blood Donation Campaign-
Every two seconds, someone in India requires blood and it is our responsibility to help those in needs. You can request a local blood bank to set up a camp in a common area near and spread the word so that people can come and donate their blood. By hosting a blood drive, you and your community can make a real difference.
  • Set up a Collection Centre-
With more than 68.8% of our population being below poverty line, they cannot afford even the basic items such as blankets or clothes, shoes or books. You can set up a collection centre in your community where people can either donate their old or new clothes, academic books, shoes and any other household essential item which can then be donated.
  • Volunteer to Tutor-
We have a lot of helpers in our community such as our maids or sanitation workers who work on bare minimum wages and cannot afford to send their children to school. Everyone deserved a right to education albeit their financial status. You can create a group of tutors and visit these children alternatively to teach them the basics of language and mathematics so that they may have a brighter future.
  • Start a Community Newsletter-
Organizing a community newsletter is a fun way to get the word out and get people involved in activities in your neighbourhood and community. You can spread awareness regarding different campaigns and seek support through this newsletter. You can even put encouraging articles about social work and volunteering to inspire people.

These activities can truly inspire a community conscious and bring people together over a common cause. It will also help you to be recognised as an active member of the community, thus enhancing your career prospects and giving you an edge in your future.

Share your inspiring stories with us if you have ever been a part of such activities or if you have any ideas apart from those mentioned about that you would like to carry out.
