“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.”  – Oscar Wilde

No Greatness without Goodness

Imagine you are surrounded by little children who are more than ecstatic to see you there because they love learning English with you and playing games. They are hugging you with joy and pulling you by the hand towards the front of the room. Or you enter an elder’s house and they have tears in their eyes because they adore your company and are always eager to spend some quality time with you. This joy you feel when there is a smile on another person’s face because of you, this is the priceless reward you receive when you volunteer for the community. It is about your responsibility as a member of this society but it also about the happiness and joy you can spread around you, to the people who need it, and make their lives better with a small act of kindness.

Five Easy Volunteering Activities for Everyone

You don’t have to be a social worker or a great industrialist to be of some service to the community. Volunteering requires will and compassion, not money. Even if you are a full time working professional, we have some really simple volunteering ideas which you can do even on the weekends. Just one hour of your day can make huge difference in someone else’s life. All you need is to believe in the power of transformation.

1. Volunteer at Your Local School

We all know that the Indian education system can be an exhausting place to be in. Our teachers are overwhelmed with crowded classrooms and they hardly have any time to look beyond the syllabus that it can sometimes become monotonous for the children. You can volunteer to conduct some fun extracurricular activities say twice a week, or teach the children some skills or a specialised skill or sport that you are good at.

2. Visit an Old-age Home

Elders are like children. They just need to feel loved and well love is abundant so why not share it with someone who needs it the most? You can volunteer to visit an old-age home near you and spend time with the residents there, talk them, read something for them or participate in some activities which they enjoy.

3. Tutor a Student

There are a lot of students who go to school but cannot afford to sign up for expensive coaching classes. All they need is a little support and guidance to help them get through the tougher subject. You can volunteer just one hour of your day for these students and help them with any difficulties they might have in their studies or other academic activities.

4. Be a Good Neighbour

In today’s world of gadgets and virtual meetings, we have completely forgotten what joy it is to spend some time with the people around us. We have fallen into this habit of staying away from other people and being self-involved. Getting to know your neighbour, spending some quality time with them and helping them in times of need are another easy volunteering activity. Participation in a neighbourhood organization builds a sense of community and provides valuable services to those within the neighbourhood.

5. Spread a Word for a Cause Online

In this world full of inequality, crimes and injustice, there must be many social causes which you feel strongly about and would like to contribute one way or another. The easiest way is to promote the work of these great missionaries online, either by expressing your support for them through articles and videos, contributing some funds or encouraging more and more people to engage in their cause.
