If you are young, there is a good chance that it is likely that you are currently unemployed and even when you seek one you get hold of only low-quality jobs. The jobs are not permanent either and are likely to be underpaid. If you are young and a woman, it is worse. You are likely to be more underpaid than men your age. Moreover, the jobs are part-time and temporary.

In this context, it is important for you to understand that education and formal job training are necessary to fit into the job market. However, it is also evident that the current systems are not geared up to meet this demand and are falling short in addressing the current needs of the job market. A large number of young people today are not basically literate and skill with numbers is below required standards. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG Target 4.4) have ‘the increase in numbers of skilled youth’ and ‘suitable jobs for young people of today’ as their main items.

Given below are some important pointers that will help you to celebrate the World Youth Skills Day this year which falls on July 15 in a different manner so as to tackle the unemployment crisis that is looming large in the coming times.

1. You can help to spread the awareness

You can do your bit by spreading the knowledge that over a quarter of the total working-age population comprises of youth and over 80 million young people aged between 18 and 24 are on the lookout for jobs. There has never been a higher potential than this for social and economic progress worldwide. It is important for everyone to understand that how we invest in youth skills is how we are going to define our future. In the light of this fact, it is crucial that you spread this knowledge to others that vocation and skill-based education can make a difference in the employment crisis that exists today.

2. You can be a mentor

For anyone that wants to make significant progress in life, having a mentor is important. You can choose to become a mentor and establish emotional bonds to provide the support and guidance that are so required for youth to help them to succeed in life and reach their goals.

You choose to have either a formal or an informal relationship with your ward. However, some components that are required for successful mentoring are consistency, empathy, caring attitude, and willingness for a long-term association. For youth, mentoring can also be focused on a specific topic such as improvement in academic performance, etc.

3. You can become a volunteer

Many organizations today offer benefits to employees that put in volunteering hours. This can become a blessing in disguise and can contribute to skill-building amongst the participants. As an example, if yours is a tech company, you can send young employees to solve IT problems at non-profit organizations. This helps them improve their skills in specific areas. Moreover, it gives them a glimpse of the community around them and helps them develop social skills as well.  The most important factor is, however, choosing the right type of projects that instil valuable skills in your employees.

As part of the World Youth Skills Day celebrations this year, you can take a pledge to pay heed to the challenges that the youth face in today’s world and counter them in such a manner to instil skills that contribute to sustainable development in the future.
