“I always wondered why somebody doesn’t do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody.” – Lily Tomlin
Be the Change You Wish to See in the World
Sometimes, there are some rewards in this world that are greater and much more precious than any monetary gains. You may have heard from a lot of people that a career in social work is all about unpaid voluntary work and not much to be earned from. But is life worth only a few pennies that you earn? No, it is about being somebody who cares about something beyond their own needs, someone who can feel the pain in the world and wishes to make a difference, a change, to show compassion and care for another human soul. This is what social work is all about. It is about making this world a better place to live in for all living things, not just humans but all living creatures. And as the world progresses, the role of a social worker is going to become more and more prominent.
Social Work is a Growing World of Opportunities
Social work is a fast-growing field, composed of intelligent and emotionally strong professionals that represent the populations with the most need. Social work makes for an incredibly fulfilling yet emotionally taxing career choice. Professionals enter challenging work environments to aid people facing uphill battles and often find themselves helping with crisis situations, such as mental health or abuse emergencies. As we chase economic growth, industrial revolutions and technological progress, we are going to need people who will advocate for the weak, who will stand up to protect earth’s resources and stop us from destroying one another in the hunger for power. The future of social work will need human advocators who will take a stand for humanity, love and compassion. Here are a few reasons to consider a career in social work.
- A Variety of Opportunities
Social work is not about sitting at a desk and doing mundane work over and over again. This field offers numerous opportunities in several different fields of society. This type of work is more practical and active and requires a lot of mental and physical strength but is also highly satisfying at the same time.
- A Way to Connect
This is the perfect path to connect with a particular community or people in a positive role and provide them with access to resources, referrals to other professionals and by counselling individuals and families.
- Allows You to Make a Difference
We as humans are born with this innate want of having a purpose in life, to do something which will bring us happiness and satisfaction. Social work will give you this purpose in life and at the same time make a huge difference to someone in need. And it allows you to personally track the progress of your efforts and follow up on a satisfactory result.
- The World Needs a Voice
Another very big reason to pursue a career in social work is that you can become a voice for someone who can’t be heard. The weaker, the underprivileged, the injustice who need someone to speak for them and fight for them to help improve their living conditions. Social workers have a unique ability to speak up in the public space on behalf of others and navigate systems in a way that benefits those in need.
- It Improves Your Self-esteem
When you get blessing and hear praises about yourself for the work or the initiative that made a difference in this world, you feel your confidence growing. Social work is beneficial both for the giver and the receiver because it is a two-way path to progress. You improve the lives of those in need and in return you improve your own life as well by developing and growing in many ways.
The future of social work is bright and fulfilling and we always need more selfless advocated in this world who believes that everyone deserves a chance at a better life.

No Greatness without Goodness
Imagine you are surrounded by little children who are more than ecstatic to see you there because they love learning English with you and playing games. They are hugging you with joy and pulling you by the hand towards the front of the room. Or you enter an elder’s house and they have tears in their eyes because they adore your company and are always eager to spend some quality time with you. This joy you feel when there is a smile on another person’s face because of you, this is the priceless reward you receive when you volunteer for the community. It is about your responsibility as a member of this society but it also about the happiness and joy you can spread around you, to the people who need it, and make their lives better with a small act of kindness.
Five Easy Volunteering Activities for Everyone
You don’t have to be a social worker or a great industrialist to be of some service to the community. Volunteering requires will and compassion, not money. Even if you are a full time working professional, we have some really simple volunteering ideas which you can do even on the weekends. Just one hour of your day can make huge difference in someone else’s life. All you need is to believe in the power of transformation.
1. Volunteer at Your Local School
We all know that the Indian education system can be an exhausting place to be in. Our teachers are overwhelmed with crowded classrooms and they hardly have any time to look beyond the syllabus that it can sometimes become monotonous for the children. You can volunteer to conduct some fun extracurricular activities say twice a week, or teach the children some skills or a specialised skill or sport that you are good at.
2. Visit an Old-age Home
Elders are like children. They just need to feel loved and well love is abundant so why not share it with someone who needs it the most? You can volunteer to visit an old-age home near you and spend time with the residents there, talk them, read something for them or participate in some activities which they enjoy.
3. Tutor a Student
There are a lot of students who go to school but cannot afford to sign up for expensive coaching classes. All they need is a little support and guidance to help them get through the tougher subject. You can volunteer just one hour of your day for these students and help them with any difficulties they might have in their studies or other academic activities.
4. Be a Good Neighbour
In today’s world of gadgets and virtual meetings, we have completely forgotten what joy it is to spend some time with the people around us. We have fallen into this habit of staying away from other people and being self-involved. Getting to know your neighbour, spending some quality time with them and helping them in times of need are another easy volunteering activity. Participation in a neighbourhood organization builds a sense of community and provides valuable services to those within the neighbourhood.
5. Spread a Word for a Cause Online
In this world full of inequality, crimes and injustice, there must be many social causes which you feel strongly about and would like to contribute one way or another. The easiest way is to promote the work of these great missionaries online, either by expressing your support for them through articles and videos, contributing some funds or encouraging more and more people to engage in their cause.
