Each day planet Earth is dying a slow death at the hands of human ignorance.  We are losing some wonderful species of animals and plants to the industrialization that destroys their homes. The pollution levels are reaching new peaks while the quality of the environment is degrading with every passing minute. It is our moral responsibility to save the planet and stop this mass destruction of the natural resources. For centuries, we have exploited the creations of nature for our material benefits; it is high time that we give back something in return.

This Earth Day let us pledge to make a difference by contributing towards the preservation of the deteriorating ecosystems.

Here are some of the Earth Day activities by which you can make an impact on the health of the planet that we call home.

1. Grow Your Own Food

There is no better feeling than growing your own food and nurturing the crops in your very own kitchen garden. Not only does this practice provide organically grown, chemical-free fruits and vegetables, it also reduces the carbon footprint by eliminating the transportation of goods to your local markets. Another way to curb the pollution caused by transportation is to opt for locally grown produce. This will support the local farmers and will help improve the environmental conditions.

2. Plant a Tree

Planting a tree in your backyard will help with purifying the air and will also provide a cool shade to the future generations. This is the best legacy that you can leave behind for your progeny. If you do not have ample space in your home then you can volunteer for an organization that conducts plantation drives. By re-establishing the greenery of the planet, you will play a major role in restoring the climatic balance.

3. Volunteer for Local Environmental Groups

There are several organizations and groups that focus on the preservation of the environment. You can participate in their initiatives by volunteering for these environmental groups. There are many ways in which you can contribute, such as conducting awareness drives, cleaning up a local river, distributing cloth bags to discourage the use of plastic etc. Any endeavor, big or small, is significant enough to drastically improve the state of the local ecosystem.

4. Educate the Children Regarding the Environment

The children and youth of the country are the harbingers of change. It is essential that the young generation is well informed regarding the Eco-friendly practices and their positive impact on the environment. Visit a school or a neighborhood to conduct a seminar that explains how human actions can severely damage the fragile balance of the planet. Encourage the children to spread the message among their friends and families. They can be the best advocates for nature.

5. Cycle to Work or Join a Carpool

One of the primary contributors to air pollution is the plethora of vehicles that can be spotted on the roads at all times of the day. A great way to ensure that your daily commute to work is not killing the environment is to take up cycling. If cycling is impractical for you due to some reason then you can join or start a carpool. Even one less car on the road is a step in the right direction.

These are some of the recommendations on how to celebrate Earth Day; however, there are innumerable ways in which you can donate your sweat for the betterment of the planet. Be it volunteering for environmental organizations, or visiting a Farmstay to learn about the traditional ways of living that do not jeopardize the environment, there are so many methods of bringing a change. Let this Earth Day be the start of your mission to restore the former glory of the planet, one drop of sweat at a time.
