“The agricultural revolution transformed the earth and changed the fate of humanity. It produced an entirely new mode of subsistence, which remains the foundation of the global economy to this day.” As said by Robyn Davidson exhibits the importance of agriculture on this earth.

India is an agricultural land with its rich heritage. It plays a vital role in the economy of a country. It provides employment to rural people. It contributes about 16% of total GDP (Gross Domestic Product). It is meant for production of basic food crops. Modern agriculture also includes fruit cultivation, dairy, poultry, mushroom, forestry etc. The marketing, production, processing, distributing, all of these requires manpower. Manpower with the right skill-set is the must for making the agriculture successful.

Another concept for development of agriculture has come is “Agritourism”. It is the practice of attracting urban tourists and visitors back to their roots for having authentic farm experience. Agritourism can be said as agricultural tourism where you can choose to stay on a farm for few days or a month and learn about the on-farm activities. It has recreational as well as educational value. But without people making it happen, it cannot be well established. The farmers lack manpower and the on-farm business scopes, thus, most of them decide to change their occupation. If this continues, the Mother Nature would be in trouble.

We as a consumer, who get the ready-made food at our doorstep just by giving money, are very fortunate. This is not the case with farmers and their family. They slog day and night, lack money and a decent lifestyle just to provide food for us.

It is a crucial condition and we need to put our efforts to sustain the growth of the agriculture and thereby the country. Let me first tell you why to contribute for agriculture and then I would show you how to do it. By helping the farmers in their farm work, you can contribute to the livelihood, national income, international trade, the food and fodder, the raw materials, can create vast employment opportunities and donate your time and energy for the overall economic development of the country. How cool!

This is not as tough as it sounds. It is the broader perspective or a big picture of looking at the advantages of your baby-steps towards the ultimate growth. But it definitely would make you feel proud and your efforts worth.

As I mentioned earlier about Agritourism, it allows you to do many farm activities during your farm stays. The activities may include wine making and tasting- this is very fun and exciting activity to perform. You get to learn this activity and help the wineries in making the wine. There is one named as Pick-your-own fruit or U-pick, which would allow you to take out the ready-to-eat fruits and vegetables from its plant. This is also a great activity to do with your family or friends. You also get to socialize with others. You can also help in basic farm activities such as grass cutting and seed sowing. Learning this activity would also help you to do it for yourself at your place. Other than such activities you can also help the farmers in their daily chores. Most of the farm, ranch or landholders would be more than happy if you show interest in their work.

You can always contribute to such activities of agriculture in any season. Visiting an Agritourism center with your family would allow you to learn about all the farm activities plus you would be helping the rural people in a great way. By such activities, they would find sufficient employment in their place, which would stop them migrating to an urban area and that can be disadvantageous for the agriculture. So, it is very exciting activity and is a deed of kindness to our mother nature.
