The First Responders- Volunteers of a Changing World

Every time you step out of the house for essential chores you are hit with emptiness, silence and desolation. The earth is taking a break, to heal, to recover and to rejuvenate. This is the new rhythm of life that has brought numerous challenges in our daily lives. We are scared to go near another human soul, talk to each other due to the rapid spread of the virus. But as human beings, we are hard-wired to connect, to care for others and to contribute to this rising crisis in our community, state or nation. We are now learning to live with this pandemic, make it a part of our daily lives and also help those who need support to adapt to this changing world of masks, sanitisers and virus-infected areas. So what role will volunteering play in this changing dynamic, will it become a more regular and natural part of our daily lives?

One Group, One nation, One Community

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought the entire world together and given us one single role, to help all of the humankind stay safe and fight the virus. Despite the coronavirus, volunteering for others has continued to thrive as people find new means of connecting and giving their time and skills. People have united from different nations to come together, with passion, inspiration and commitment and respond to the cries of the weak, the underprivileged. In Europe and Central Asia, the volunteer movement has been officially recognized by several governments for the outstanding service provided by volunteers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the conditions of the virus worsening over the past three months, we have all come to accept it as a normal part of our daily life and are doing all that we can despite the deadly outcome to help the corona warriors. This is the future of volunteering. People have now jumped in more than ever to help anyone who is in crisis, may it be providing food to the migrants, getting groceries for elders or actually going to the hospital to help the overtired health workers. This feeling of unity and the urge to contribute to the crisis will be well remembered by all of us for the next few years and this is exactly what will boost the cause of volunteering. People will remember these difficult times and understand the very need of contributing to a noble cause and the joy that they get after they have made a difference to someone’s life. This era has taught all of us the importance of compassion and that no matter our age, sex, economic or educational background, we are all humans and we only have each other’s support when there is a global crisis.

Volunteers are fully recognized as first responders who re-direct their actions and introduce innovative and effective ways of helping humanity during the pandemic. Considering the negative effects of the pandemic, we should acknowledge that volunteerism is one of the most efficient tools for crisis response and recovery. They are the ultimate solution for our present and future causes and will ensure sustainable development.
