No one knows what numbers of species are being lost every year, nor the aggregate number of species that exist.
Did you know what we have…
Researcher estimate there are about five to fifteen million species of plants, animals and microorganisms and other life forms existing on Earth today, of which just around 1.5 million have been identified and named which includes around 300000 plant species, around 50,000 vertebrates of which 10,000 are birds and 4,000 are mammals, and about four to eight million insects.
…and, what is being threatened with extinction
Today, around 1,130 species of vertebrates and 1,194 species of flying creatures are considered as undermined by IUCN.
Why are species endangered?
World biodiversity is being lost significantly faster than natural extinction on account of changes in land use, unsustainable use of natural resources, invasive unknown species, pollution and climate change among others
Massive Extinctions from Human Activity…
Despite knowing about the significance of biodiversity for a long time, human activities have been causing massive extinctions. Conversion of land by the human, resulting in natural habitat destruction, is evident in many places is one example of impacts of human action on biodiversity and the introduction of invasive foreign species is usually taken about through patterns of human activity. The loss of biodiversity is also compounded by the continuous growth of human populations and unsustainable consumer lifestyles producing more waste and pollutants while urban development, deforestation, climate change, over exploitation, desertification & international conflicts are among other reasons.
Is this the kind of world we want?
The UN has also acknowledged and warned that ongoing loss of species around the globe is affecting human well-being. The urgency of the current situation demands that as a global community we not only turn around the rate of extinction but that we stop the extinction altogether and start restoring the ecological system that has been harmed and degraded over previous years and so. After all, our lives are inseparably linked with biodiversity and ultimately its protection is essential for our very survival. And the question remains what kind of world do we want? It’s time to take action!
It is just this thought and visions that Donate Your Sweat stands ardent in its will to help preserve Biodiversity for sustainable life on our planet in all its coherent magnificence. We trust that the telling story in the historical backdrop of our time will be to create awareness and perseverance about biodiversity & its actual importance for humankind still fails to identify its contribution. We can make a difference in by contributing in simpler ways, and it’s you and me who can make a difference.
