Conserve Soil

If we want to fulfill the rising demand for food while strengthening the health of our societies, our land and water, and our climate, we must support the revolution in soil health and ensure farmers have extensive access to the methods and encouragements that can shift the paradigm.

If you want to act for a cause of environment conservation & global warming, look under your feet. If we manage well, soil’s capacity to trap carbon dioxide is possibly much greater than the earlier estimate and can significantly offset increasing global emissions.

However dirt is not exciting to most people, but it is a no-risk climate solution with huge co-benefits such as nurturing soil health protects food security and increases resilience to drought, and urbanization.

It’s humble, yet mighty…

The organic substance in soil, for example, decomposing plant and animal deposits, stores more carbon than do plants and the atmosphere collectively holds. Unfortunately, the carbon in soil has been widely lost or degraded through land use alterations and unsustainable forest and agricultural practices, fires, nitrogen deposition, and other human activities.

Optimizing how the land is utilized can build soil’s carbon storage sufficient to offset future carbon emissions and some of the possible approaches are reduced tillage, use of compost, planting more perennial crops, instead of annuals, etc. All these activities can enhance the carbon storage capacity of the soil to reduce erosion by allowing roots to reach deeper into the ground. The improved soil health by retaining and restoring soil organic matter helps to yield better crops, to purify water and keeps the atmosphere cleaner.

The way forward…

Soil health might not grab the headlines, but it might be the most vital agricultural conservation undertaking of our era. This is an opportunity to take responsibility together for the land that feeds us and our children. We welcome all the stakeholders such as farmers, consumers and industry people to participate in collaborative efforts in this next soil revolution- a revolution that starts & connect us to our roots.
