Climate Change During the Corona Pandemic- Boon or Bane?
The Earth is Taking a Break to Heal
This is what we have been hearing for the past two months. The minute a worldwide lockdown was announced and humans retreated to their spacious homes, nature has come alive. We had seen news of the ozone layer healing or the rare sightings of hundreds of flamingos or dolphins being sighted in Mumbai. It is believed that because we stopped using our vehicles for two months, the pollution levels have gone down tremendous thus reducing the impact on climate change. But do you really think it is that easy to heal the damage we have inflicted for hundreds of years on our earth’s resources to be healed in a matter of two or three months? Just months ago it would have been thought impossible to close polluting factories virtually overnight and slash emissions from travel by keeping billions at home. Now we know that clear skies and silent streets can come about with shocking speed. But is that enough to heal the earth and return the ecosystems to their healthier levels?
Effects of Coronavirus on Climate Change- Good or Bad?
As the burden of the ‘industrial’ humans lifted from earth’s chest, it seemed like nature was able to breathe more easily. With the sudden lockdown and the death toll amounting to thousands across the world, manufacturing industries and power plants across the globe shut down in a matter of hours, not even days. This would have been impossible in other context but the lack of polluting vehicles and the harmful emissions from these power plants seemed to have cleared the clouded skies and given the nature time to heal itself.
In order to continue production and be able to trump the economic market, humans are harvesting the natural resources of the planet – water, fossil fuels, timber, land, ore, etc. – and plugging them into an industrial cycle which naturally tends to put out a lot of waste. This same process is also responsible for Covid-19 and other outbreaks. The need for more natural resources has forced humans to encroach on various natural habitats and expose themselves to yet unknown pathogens. The ongoing pandemic is the product of excess capitalism and undaunted consumption rates which is just one part of the environmental change that just turned out to be a lot more dangerous and quicker than the other effects of climate change.
All the positive changes that we see in the skies are temporary and once the lockdown is lifted, we will just end up going back to our old habits and abuse earth’s resources. This cannot be the answer to the changes we are seeking in order to save the earth. Shutting down the power plants and reducing the use of automobiles to reduce emission should be a lifelong change rather than a temporary one. The misuse of fossil fuels and usurping the biodiversity to increase our economic strengths will just continue to destroy the climate.
Donate Your Sweat believes in a permanent change and urges everyone one adapt these changes permanently, to reduce carbon footprints and use automobiles only when absolutely necessary.
We would like to hear about your experiences during this quarantine what you feel would be a long term solution so that earth can heal permanently. We also encourage you to volunteer to spread awareness regarding this cause and reach out to as many people as you can because even a small effort can go a long way in transforming this world.
